Do you recommend henna for dying hair?

I have dark brown/black hair, with a few grey strands :-( . I don't like the idea of chemical dyes. I want something which dyes my grey hairs a natural looking reddy-brown, but makes little difference to my natural black hairs. I prefer the idea of DIY to professional hairdressers, and I prefer the idea of natural to chemical. But apparently, there are horror stories about henna (although I've heard these only apply if you use it in addition to certain chemical dyes, or if you buy adulterated henna).

I would test it out first.

If you use natural henna the color can vary depending on the amount of time you leave it on your hair and your hair type.

You have to be careful because there may be hennas that aren't all natural, and they could damage your hair.

I've seen people with dark hair dye their hair with henna and it came out with a reddish brown tint. But i've also seen people with white hair dye their hair with henna and it's come out orange.

Lucille Ball used henna and she died.

I think you have the right idea when it comes to sticking with natural dyes.

dying your hair is very common in my culture...and it works good...without damaging you hair. Only problem is, is that you should sample it and see how long you leave it on for bcos it may dye your hair orangy which isn't wat you want

I have heard and seen people who had quite severe skin reactions to Henna, but not sure if that was in connection with other chemicals.

Might be worth to talk to a chemist / drugstore or your doctor to be on the safe side

yes because its all natural and doesnt make ur hair fall i suggest u go to a indian hair dresser. oh yea always pre oil ur hair before u apply henna. like use cocunut oil (parachute blue bottle) get it at a east indian/pakistan store. all u do is heat up the oil and when its warm apply it to ur scalp and hair and massage ur whole head and sleep with it on (sleep with plastic cap) next morning u can use the henna. pre oil is good because henna will dry out ur hair if u dont pre oil and also cocunut oil makes ur hair shiny and even healthier and longer. also when u shampoo oils pre oil ur hair with cocunut oil. trust me

henna is dying your hair.

the same problems arise.

the thing is that although henna is a natural dye, the colour of your hair is not a natural looking colour, in the 70's we all henna'd our hair but we were predominately orange!! you have to be prepared for a reddy orange glow, but it is great

Henna hair color will not cover grey hair well. It is a great solution to over processed chemically altered hair. It will help condition your hair. I personally like it.

My mom uses the henna to dye her hair and get rid of the greys. It works fine on her hair and she has no problems with it.

No , is nasty stuff, and not a very pretty result as far as tonal value or color result

I personally use henna and i find it really effective as long as you know how to use

Precautions have to be taken as henna dies the skin so apply Vaseline to areas of the skin such as around the scalp and on your ears, also wear gloves

Henna takes a long time to set

I normally wait for it to dry which can be a very long time depending on the thickness of your hair, mine usually takes all night

Also once it is dry it can be difficult to remove, but with enough patient you can easily
