Hair dye and grey roots !?

I'm in my mid 30's and am going grey at a terrible rate. My previous natural colour was chestnut brown. I have been dying my hair with a similar colour to my own but at the weekend my hairdresser persuaded me to go for something more vibrant. So now I have mad red hair but it didnt do so good at covering my grey roots. I think this looks terrible now. At least before I looked natural. Now I look like someone who is trying unsuccessfully to look young ! Is there any stuff I can buy to treal my roots and how will I know if it will end up the same colour of red as the rest of my hair?

Go back to your hairdressers - yes there are ways of doing this yourself BUT as she dyed it and you don't like it, go back, explain your reasons and ask for it to be put back to how you (that's you, the paying customer) wanted it in the first instance - and this should be free of charge.

I am not sure what brand you used, but if you have a beauty supply store you want to find a demi or semi perm hair color.

Find something in one shade darker than what you originally went or close to same shade. Just find a brown shade with no red. Apply this only to root area. This should counteract with the very vibrant root area we like to call "hot roots".

Do not do anything to the rest of your hair it should be fine!

If you used a permenant color on your gray hair root area and the color was a red base it will always get bright. You should always use a diffferent color on the root area when going red.

If you have a sallys beauty go there they should be able to tell you what to buy and how to use it!

If this is something your hairdresser did, go back to her. She should fix this for free. don't feel bad this could be a great learning experience for her. Tell her about the "hot root" thing and she will know!

Good luck

Go back to your hairdressers and get them to correct it. The professional dyes are way better than anything you can get over the counter and they should not charge you.
